Training course on "Improving learning and teaching through the constructive alignment of learning outcomes, teaching and assessment"

The training course, under the framework of the institutional project funded by the United Board for Asian Christian Higher Education for the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-HCMC in the academic year 2016-2017, was held from 3rd to 7th January, 2017 (phase 1) in Room D608, at 10-12 Dinh Tien Hoang Street, District 1, HCMC.

The teaching staff from Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature, Faculty of Journalism and Communication, Faculty of Vietnamese Linguistics and Literature, Faculty of Education, Faculty of International Relation and Faculty of Vietnamese Studies was selected to attend this intensive training course. Only selected teaching staff from the faculties which have been assessed by AUN-QA and/or have applied CDIO approach in program and curriculum development is eligible to join the training course. The training course consisted of 9 sessions hosted by Professor Denise Chalmers from University of Western Australia, the mentor of the project. The main training content concentrating on improving teaching and learning quality through constructive alignment of teaching and assessment with learning outcomes is divided into five main workshops: Workshop 1 "Constructive Alignment, Course Learning Outcomes", Workshop 2 "Designing teaching and learning activities to achieve the Learning outcomes", Workshop 3 "Designing assessment activities for the Learning outcomes", Workshop 4 "Bringing it all together and planning for evaluation and review" and, Workshop 5 "Planning for ongoing implementation".


After this training course, the selected teaching staff will have one semester from January, 2017 to May, 2017 to apply what they are well trained about how to apply constructive alignment to improve quality teaching by this training course to their own course in the second semester of the academic year 2016-2017, under the guidance of Professor Denise Chalmers in terms of online mentoring. In addition, as designed in this institutional project, there will be a closing workshop to be held in June, 2017 for the selected teaching staff from six Faculties involved in the project to share their best practices and lessons learnt from applying constructive alignment of learning outcomes, teaching and assessment on their own course to other teaching staff of the whole university.


As designed in the project, the 2nd training course, hosted by the two guest speakers: Dr. Peter David Looker, Director of Centre for University Teaching, from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and Dr. Paula Hodgson, Professional Consultant of Center for Improving the quality of teaching and researching, University of Chinese University, Hong Kong, will take place on from 16 to 17, February, 2017 at the university campus. Moreover, to assess the effectiveness of the project, the project team has invited Mr. Johnson Ong Chee Bin, AUN-QA experts, to evaluate the implementation process and the results of the project as well as to suggest the follow-up activities for the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-HCMC to sustain and develop the expected outcomes of the project.
