Nobel laureate to chair exchange at Ho Chi Minh City university

American physicist and Nobel laureate Prof. George F. Smoot III will host an exchange with students and instructors in Ho Chi Minh City later this month.

The event, which will be organized on August 20 at the Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City, welcomes all students and instructors from high schools, colleges and universities in the city and neighboring regions.

At the event, Prof. Smoot, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2006, will present the history of the universe, provide images of the embryo of the cosmos, summarize the status of the universe based on experimental observations and talk about the challenging issues that the universes is facing.

The exchange, jointly held by the Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City and the Meet Vietnam Organization, will provide scientific knowledge and give participants the chance to be inspired on their journey of science.

Interested science lovers can register to take part in the event at http://osa.hcmiu.edu.vn/dangky until the end of August 9.

As planned, participants will be picked up by a bus from Turtle Lake in District 1 at 12:20 on August 20 to be taken to the exchange venue, and will visit the National University-Ho Chi Minh City later.

Smoot is a professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley, and senior researcher at the Lawrence Berkel National Laboratory in the U.S., as well as a professor at the Paris Diderot University in France.

In 2003, he was awarded the Einstein Medal by the Albert Einstein Society.

The award is presented to people for scientific findings, works, or publications related to Albert Einstein each year.

In 2009, he received the Oersted Medal from the American Association of Physics Teachers for notable contributions to the teaching of physics.

The professor is in Vietnam to join international scientific conferences on physics, as well as workshops on astrophysics and particle physics, lasting from July 19 to August 22, in the south-central province of Binh Dinh.
